Apple Pay, now in the Philippines: The Quiet Launch we’ve been waiting for

Apple Pay launched in the Philippines on August 3, enabling users to link local cards for contactless payments via iPhone or Apple Watch. The service offers reduced compliance barriers for banks, enhancing accessibility. Currently, its bank support is limited compared to Google Pay, with usability at select retailers like 7-Eleven and Starbucks.

Starting August 3, Apple Pay is officially live in the Philippines. For the first time, users can link local credit and debit cards to their Apple Wallet to make contactless payments using an iPhone or Apple Watch.

How It Works

The setup process mirrors the experience in other global markets:

  1.  Open the Wallet app on an iPhone or Apple Watch.
  2.  Tap the “+” icon and input the card information.
  3.  Complete the activation by verifying via a bank call or text message.

Market Context and Regulation

This launch finally offers Apple users a tap-to-pay solution that Android, GCash, and Maya users have already been enjoying. Google Pay previously debuted in the country on November 18, 2025, with a wide array of initial bank partners.

Both digital wallets were able to enter the market smoothly because the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) classified them as technology service providers rather than full-fledged banks. This distinction allowed local financial institutions to integrate with the apps without having to navigate the strict compliance requirements of a full banking license.

Current Bank Support and Usability

Currently, Apple Pay’s banking lineup is smaller than Google Pay’s. While Apple hasn’t updated its official regional support page, early users report successfully linking cards from:

  • UnionBank
  • GoTyme
  • Metrobank
  • Chinabank

Once activated, the service works at standard NFC-enabled checkout terminals, with successful payments already reported at establishments like 7-Eleven and Starbucks.

Official Status

As of now, neither Apple nor its partner banks have released a formal press release regarding the launch. Because of this, the exact scope of supported card types whether prepaid, debit, or credit remains officially unconfirmed.
